April 7-13, 2025, marks the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week and Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH) is proud to join communities across the nation in recognizing this important occasion. Public health touches every aspect of life, from the food people eat to the air they breathe.

This year’s theme, “It Starts Here,” focuses on the vital role public health departments play in promoting, protecting and assuring optimal health and public safety conditions for their communities. The American Public Health Association has identified five key priority areas for National Public Health Week:

  • It Starts Here: Your Health is Our Mission – Ensuring access to quality healthcare and services for all.
  • Climate Action Starts Here: Championing Resilience for Health – Addressing environmental challenges that impact public health.
  • Health Equity Starts Here: Optimizing Health for All – Striving for fair and just health opportunities for every community member.
  • Advocacy Starts Here: Amplifying Voices for Public Health – Encouraging community participation in health policies and decision-making.
  • The Future of Public Health Starts Here: Strengthening the Public Health Workforce – Supporting and growing the next generation of public health professionals.

SCPH remains committed to improving the well-being of residents and addressing key health issues such as food insecurity, mental health and housing. With recent accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board, SCPH is positioned to further meet and exceed public health needs in the community.

SCPH offers over 65 programs that support community health. Here are a few that exemplify the impact of public health in the region:

Black Infant Health Program
The Black Infant Health Program provides support to African American mothers and aims to reduce the rates of infant mortality in Sacramento County. The program empowers mothers with knowledge on pregnancy, breastfeeding, parenting and mental health through culturally tailored group sessions and case management.

Mental and Behavioral Health Services
Sacramento County continues to offer trauma-informed services for individuals and families with the understanding that mental health is increasingly being recognized as a critical public health issue. The Stop Stigma Sacramento Speakers Bureau is one initiative that encourages open dialogue about mental illness and fosters a culture of support in the region.

Sexual Health Promotion Unit
This unit is dedicated to reducing barriers to sexual health care. They work with local organizations to provide accessible education, testing and treatment to residents. Services are client-centered, nonjudgmental and rooted in a commitment to health equity.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
Protecting children from lead exposure is a top priority. This program raises awareness about lead hazards, promotes early testing and works to prevent long-term health effects from lead poisoning.

Immunization Assistance Program
The Immunization Assistance Program provides resources for residents to access vaccinations, including annual flu clinics and immunization education. They ensure the community stays protected from preventable diseases.

SCPH invites community members and partners to engage in this week’s activities, learn more about available services, and join us in building a healthier, more resilient community.
