The Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SacDOT) is closing the Clay Station Road bridge at Browns Creek, located 1.2 miles north of Twin Cities Road.
On Friday, SacDOT closed Clay Station Road to commuter traffic, and the closure is expected to last two months. Emergency repairs will commence after obtaining the necessary permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The closure is necessary to perform critical structural repairs to the bridge and to repair the pavement on and around the bridge to ensure it can continue to serve the community until funding for a full replacement can be obtained.
The County is closing the full seven-mile stretch of Clay Station Road to through traffic, but area residents will still have access. Residents on both sides of the Clay Station Road of Browns Creek Bridge will access their properties from their respective sides; however, they will not be able to drive across the bridge.
The bridge will be closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians, to allow crews to complete the repairs, which are anticipated to be finished by end of July 2025.
Clay Station Road carries approximately 3,000 vehicles per day. Alta Mesa Road, Twin Cities Road, and Dillard Road will serve as detour routes for vehicles accessing the Herald and Wilton communities.
The cost of the emergency repair work will be around $500,000. These emergency repairs are expected to last for ten years. The estimated replacement cost is $10 million, which will be covered by federal and local funds. The County has applied and is awaiting approval for the 2026 Highway Bridge Program for funding to replace the infrastructure.
