Flu and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory (lung) infections that can cause serious illness. Although more people tend to get sick with these illnesses in the fall and winter, flu and COVID-19 circulate year-round. CDC estimates that flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths each year in the United States.

Everyone 6 months and above should receive updated 2024/2025 flu and COVID-19 vaccines. People 65 and above and those who are immunocompromised should receive a second dose of 2024–25 COVID-19 vaccine six months after their first dose.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are updated each year to provide the best protection against circulating variants. Making sure you and your family members are up to date on flu and COVID-19 vaccines is a safe and powerful way to help prevent severe illness and hospitalization. You can even get your flu and COVID-19 vaccines during the same visit.

Vaccination for flu and COVID-19 also reduces the risk of bird flu co-infection and lost time at work. For messages specifically for farmworkers at highest risk of bird flu, visit the California Department of Public Health webpage
