Sacramento County Public Health proudly joins the nation in celebrating National Public Health Week, observed from April 1 to April 7, 2024. Under the theme of "Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We are all Public Health," our community acknowledges the crucial role of public health in safeguarding the well-being of all its members.

As we commemorate this week, Sacramento County Public Health is eager to highlight the over 65 programs and initiatives available to our residents. Join us as we celebrate the collective efforts the County takes towards a healthier and thriving Sacramento. Below we highlight a few of the Public Health programs:

Black Infant Health Program

The Black Infant Health Program provides services to African American women who are 16 years or older, pregnant or postpartum for the purpose of eliminating the disproportionate rate of African American infant mortality in the Sacramento County community. African American women experience two-and-a-half times the rate of infant deaths compared to other racial and ethnic groups in our community.

The Black Infant Health Program provides a support group that encourages empowerment and social support in the context of a life course perspective. In addition, social service case management is provided to ensure access to community and health-related services. The services provided by the Black Infant Health Program are done in a culturally-relevant manner that respects the woman's beliefs and cultural values while promoting overall health and wellness. Support group sessions cover the following topics:

  • African American history
  • Understanding and managing stress
  • Resources and services in the community
  • Myths vs. medical facts related to pregnancy
  • Nutrition and exercise
  • Fetal development/danger signs of early labor
  • Breastfeeding
  • Parenting styles
  • Baby safety
  • Postpartum depression and baby blues
  • Nurturing touch and its impact on bonding
  • Intimate relationship issues including improving communication
  • Sexual health
  • Planning for your future/goal setting

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP)

The Sacramento County CLPPP provides services to the community for the purpose of increasing awareness regarding the hazards of lead exposure, reducing lead exposure, and increasing the number of children assessed and appropriately blood tested for lead poisoning. Their mission is to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of lead poisoning among Sacramento County's children under the age of six, as well as other high-risk children. No level of lead in the body is safe! Small amounts of lead can build up in the body and cause lifelong learning and behavioral problems. Lead poisoning is one of the most common environmental illnesses in California but is completely preventable.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

The mission of the Sacramento County EMS Agency is to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the quality of emergency medical services, and to provide medical oversight to EMS responders that treat and transport residents/visitors to hospitals within Sacramento County.

Immunization Assistance Program

Sacramento County's Immunization Assistance Program provides information about immunizations and immunization services available to children and adults in the County. Program employees will refer clients to immunization resources in their area, provide consultation services to parents, community-based organizations, medical providers, daycare providers, and schools regarding immunizations and applicable immunization laws. Seasonal flu vaccine clinics are conducted annually for all age groups.

Oral Health

The Sacramento County Oral Health Program connects people to dental care and provides oral health education and resources for the community.  The program offers resources for providers, information for parents, cavity prevention tips and common factors of dental injuries.

Stop Stigma Sacramento Speakers Bureau

The Stop Stigma Sacramento Speakers Bureau is part of Behavioral Health's Mental Illness: It's Not Always What You Think stigma and discrimination reduction project. Speakers with lived experience share their stories of hope and recovery. There are so many ways to join this movement and stop the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness. Whether you are interested in joining the Stop Stigma Sacramento Speakers Bureau or simply want to take our pledge to show your support, together, we can change minds, attitudes and outcomes in our community.
