The Building Permits and Inspection (BPI) Division of the Community Development Department has launched a new “AI tool” to help residential construction customers with the building permit process! This new tool, known as the “Residential Development Navigation Assistant” (DNA) tool is available on BPI’s homepage

Customers only need a residential address to start. They can then proceed by answering a couple of simple project questions to receive a customized, step-by-step guide that navigates them through the building permit process.

The DNA tool will determine information such as:

  • Is a building permit required?
  • What department approvals are needed?
  • How to contact these departments
  • What items need to be included within construction submittal documents
  • Forms that will be required during the permit process
  • How to apply online for their project
  • Overview of the review process
  • How to schedule their inspections

Some examples of projects this tool could be used to navigate:

  • Building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
  • Home remodels
  • Pool installations or modifications
  • Building patios
  • Electric vehicle charger installation
  • And so much more!

Customers can create an account to keep track of their searches or use the tool as a guest. Please note that this tool is only currently available for single family-residential project, like duplexes, half-plexes and standalone homes. It’s free – check it out today!
