H5N1 bird flu (avian influenza) has been spreading in poultry and cattle across the U.S. As of Oct. 23, 2024, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has confirmed 15 human cases in California. Evidence continues to suggest only animal-to-human spread of the virus in California.

Currently, there are no cases of bird flu in Sacramento County. The risk to the general public remains low, although additional cases may arise among those in regular contact with infected animals.

People who work with infected poultry or dairy cows can protect themselves by using personal protective equipment (PPE):

  • NIOSH® approved respirator
  • Goggles or face shield
  • Coveralls
  • Head cover
  • Boots
  • Gloves

These individuals should contact their local health department right away if experiencing symptoms of bird flu, including eye redness/discharge, fever, cough/sore throat, muscle aches and shortness of breath.
