Due to the incoming low wind chill temperatures meeting the approved thresholds this weekend, there are weather respite locations activating this weekend:
- The Department of Human Assistance will be opening a warming center nightly at 1725 28th Street, Sacramento, CA 95816, beginning Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 27, at 7 a.m. All community members are welcome. Pets must be on a leash or contained in an animal carrier at all times. Guests will have access to a warm, dry location as well as water and snacks.
- In addition, in coordination with the Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing (DHSH), First Step Communities (FSC) is expanding capacity to include an additional 35 beds at the North A Emergency Shelter at 1400 North A Street, Sacramento, CA 95811 to help unhoused persons living in the nearby area to get respite from the cold overnights beginning Friday, Nov. 24 at 4:30 p.m. until Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 8 a.m. These beds will be available to unhoused individuals in the immediate area and can accept walk-ups, contingent upon availability. This location cannot support pets.
- The City of Sacramento is also activating weather-respite operations at its Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) at 3615 Auburn Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95821. The OEC will provide weather respite from 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24 through 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28. Walk-ups will be accepted, with the OEC able to accommodate up to 50 guests as part of its weather-respite activation. The center has storage available for personal belongings if needed and will accept pets.
Regional Transit will provide free rides to North A and the OEC. Those interested in free rides to respite can present a flyer on their phone, or a printed copy.
