Freedom Park Drive Won American Planning Association Award
The County's first street of its kind, Freedom Park Drive was awarded for its sustainable landscape and design. The departments of
Community Development,
Water Resources and
Transportation collaborated to create a street that fosters greenhouse gas emissions reduction and water conservation. Energy efficient LED street lighting, recycled tires in the asphalt paving, roundabouts instead of stop signs, and other design features such as wide sidewalks and well-marked bike lanes improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and encourage fitness opportunities. Twenty-Four Years of Excellence in Financial Reporting
For the 24th straight year, Sacramento County received the
Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The County was recognized for their “spirit of full disclosure,” or maintaining clear and open communication regarding their finances. Their commitment to motivating others to read and review their Finance Report demonstrates their desire for transparency and clarity, allowing them 24 years of excellence.
Youth Detention Facility Recognized by the Performance-based Standards Learning Institute for a Second Time
Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility was selected as one of three facilities to win the
2013 PbS Barbara Allen-Hagen Award for changing its culture and improving supervision practices. The Youth Detention Facility is the only facility that has previously been awarded the BAH for related efforts.
CA Integrity Review Report
In their 2013 CA Integrity Review Report, the US Department of Agriculture named Sacramento County as a best practice model for handling California “Food Stamp” fraud cases. The Program Integrity Division’s Special Investigations Unit staff provide all information up front to the Sacramento County DA and the case is “trial ready” when sent forward. The cooperative working relationship between the two departments and the pre-established thresholds help Sacramento County achieve excellent results in prosecuting fraud.
Building Assistance Centers Earns GO-Biz County Streamlining Superstar

Youth Detention Facility Receives Barbara Allen-Hagen Performance-based Standards (PbS) Award
This national award is given to facilities that provide safe, effective programs that help turn around the lives of youths in the juvenile justice system. The County’s Facility was selected for best exemplifying core principles by emphasizing rehabilitation rather than punishment. The Probation Department provides behavior management training and supports open communication between administration, supervisors and front line staff to create a partnership focused on helping youth.

Voter Registration App Wins CSAC Challenge Award
The mobile application, SACVOTE, is a tool that improves access to voting and election information for Sacramento County voters and won the California State Association of Counties Challenge award for a third year in a row. The app, developed in-house takes advantage of smart phone technology to use with smart phones or tablets to get turn-by-turn directions to their polling place, find nearby ballot drop off locations, view their sample ballot booklet and check their registration status.

Connecticut Commends Probation for Reunification of a Victim and Her Family
In August 2013, Juvenile Court probation officers were instrumental in a complex human sex-trafficking case, which involved a victim from the state of Connecticut. Staff involved was commended by Connecticut and the Chief Probation Officer for their efficiency and dedication..

Sacramento County Water Agency Receives the 2013 Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Award
The Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Program promotes businesses that adopt environmentally friendly practices, prevent pollution, and conserve resources. The Sacramento County Water Agency was honored in the Water Conservation for a Large Organization for creating innovative ways to implement green building measures and consistently making a robust effort to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and pollution and endorse recycling programs. The Sacramento County Water Agency takes great pride in delivering a reliable, high quality drinking water supply to its over 50,000 customers while implementing environmentally-friendly business practices.
Sacramento International Airport Receives the 2013 Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Award
The Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC) acknowledged the Sacramento International Airport’s Terminal B will yield a greenhouse gas reduction of 793 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually from the baseline, according to SMUD engineers. Nominated for Green Building for a Large Organization, Terminal B energy savings will be approximately 1.87 gigawatt hours.
Probation Officer Recognized for Contributions
On April 27, 2013, the
Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution (CAPCR) at California State University Sacramento awarded Senior Deputy Probation Officer Ray Lozada the 2013 Peace Service Award for his outstanding service in promoting nonviolence and gang prevention among youth, especially throughout the African American population.
Best of the Web and Digital Government Achievement (DGAA) Award – Center for Digital Government
The Center for Digital Government announced that Sacramento County’s website took fourth place honors in its
2013 Best of the Web Awards. For 18 years they have been recognizing cities, counties and states for their outstanding portal websites. In addition to the Best of the Web honors, the county also was recognized for the DGAA, which looks at projects at the application and infrastructure level. For this honor, the County won for its
Aviation Shared Use Operating Environment, at the Sacramento County Airport System.

Environmental Management’s New Web Portal to Protect Drinking Water Wins NACo Award
The National Association of Counties recognized this innovative county program that dramatically reduces program costs and is more efficient to process, track and manage nearly 15,000 backflow protection devices and the processing of 75,000 documents annually.

The Breastfeeding Coalition of Greater Sacramento awarded the Department of Health and Human Services Women, Infant, and Children program, the Mother-Baby Workplace Award. Public Technology Institute Recognizes the County for Four of Its Projects
The Airports Aviation Shared Use Network was one of 6 winners in the category of IT and Telecommunications. Additionally, the following received Significant Achievement Recognition for: Sacramento County VoIP in the IT and Telecommunication category; Regional Communication System for the Public Safety Technology and Emergency Management category; and the Food Inspection Mobile App was in the Web, E-government and Mobile category.
Probation Service Provider Employee Nominated for Unsung Hero Award
Sarita Prasad, a treatment counselor with Strategies For Change at Probation’s South Adult Day Reporting Center, was honored as a nominee for the “Unsung Hero” award at the Women’s Appreciation Awards Ceremony in Sacramento and congratulated by Congresswoman Doris Matsui, Senator Darrell Steinberg and Assemblyman Roger Dickinson..

Floodplain Management Program Mitigates Flood Risk and Reduces Premiums
FEMA will upgrade Sacramento County’s Community Rating System (CRS) ranking to a “3” for its outstanding achievements in mitigating regional flood risks. As a result, Sacramento County residents in flood prone areas will receive up to a 35 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums.

Park Ranger to Receive Statewide Honor
The Park Rangers Association of California honors Sacramento County Park Ranger Christopher Kemp with the Medal of Valor for his actions off-duty to confront an extremely dangerous assailant who was viciously beating a woman. Without the selfless actions of Ranger Kemp the women would not have survived.
