2009 Awards

​Community Service Award- Unity Bar Association - Sacramento County Public Defender Recognized for Community Service

In October, the Asian/Pacific Bar Association awarded Assistant Public Defender Jessie Morris for his work helping Middle Eastern and Hispanic families who were targeted for racial profiling and civil rights violations. He helped protect those families by pairing them with pro bono lawyers and community organizations to resolve immigration problems, to prevent excessive governmental surveillance and intrusions, and to assist them through difficult interrogations and investigations.

The South Asian Bar Association awarded Assistant Public Defender Niti Gupta for her service with the City of Sacramento, Office of Youth Development in which she helped spearhead and organize the Youth Empowerment Summit for over 300 at-risk youth. By collaborating with fellow community stakeholders to educate and connect youth to alternatives outside gang affiliation, recidivism rates for at-risk youth are reduced. 

Special Recognition Award - California Public Defender’s Association

In April, the Juvenile Division received the award for cutting edge and exemplary work. 

Project of the Year - American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento Chapter

The Department of Waste Management and Recycling won the large agency division environmental award for the Kiefer Landfill Module 3, Phases 1 and 2 Liner Construction project. 

Merit Award for Comprehensive Planning for a Large Jurisdiction: Land Use Master Plans for Easton Place and Glenborough at Easton

California Chapter Am​erican Planning Association Awards Program: Planning and Community Development Department 

LEED Standards– Gold Certification - Sacramento Environmental Commission

The Animal Shelter is one of three shelters in North America to receive gold certification in the Voluntarily Exceeding Environmental Regulatory Requirements category. The Shelter was designed by the Architectural Services Division and constructed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. 

Litigation Award – California County Counsels’ Association

Supervising Deputy County Counsel Michele Bach and Deputy County Counsel Janice Snyder received this award for their work in challenging the State Controller’s withholding of local funds. 

Certificate of Achievement - Government Finance Officers Association

The Department of Finance won the award of Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Annual Financial Reporting ​for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2010. 

Achievement Award Winner - National Association of Counties

Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance for “Case Update Tracking and Eligibility (CUTE) System" – in recognition of an effective and innovative program which contributes to and enhances county government in the United States." 

Partner of the Year” -  Internal Revenue Service

Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance for “Exceptional Community Service through the Volunteer Return Preparation Program.”

Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award  - National Purchasing Institute

The Department of General Services’ Contract and Purchasing Services Division was recognized for excellence in public procurement based on national criteria that measures innovation, professional development, eProcurement, productivity and leadership by ​National Purchasing Institute.
