Tested Positive for COVID, What Now?
Get Tested. Sacramento County Public Health is encouraging testing.
Sacramento County testing sites are NOT for: travel clearance; surgery clearance (contact healthcare provider); people with severe fever, cough, or other symptoms. (contact healthcare provider); or, people who have tested positive for COVID-19 within 10 days of the testing date.
Community Walk-Up COVID-19 PCR/Antigen Testing Sites
The Sacramento County Department of Health Services is partnering with local community agencies to provide Community-Based Testing Sites for free COVID-19 testing for Sacramento County residents. To get tested you can pre-register or walk-ups are also taken.
The PCR and Antigen tests will be administered with a self-administered nasal swab:
Sept. 22, 2021 Rapid Antigen Testing Update - There is a temporary shortage of COVID-19 antigen tests. Some sites may not have these tests available, but will have PCR tests.
Some Community Testing Sites have COVID-19 antigen testing (results in 15 minutes, but not as sensitive) and PCR testing (very sensitive, but results in 1-3 days). A positive antigen result can be followed up with a PCR test at the same visit. Antigen testing is good for regular testing or a known/suspected exposure, but not for air travel or when a PCR test is required.
Testing is available regardless of U.S. citizenship/legal residency for anyone 2 years and older (parent/guardian must accompany minors). Bring a form of identification with your date of birth to check-in, a mask/face covering, and maintain physical distancing at the testing sites. PCR results are given using the contact information you provide.

Waiting for test results or feeling sick?
By now, everyone should know that if you are sick, stay home. However, new evidence suggests that those infected may be contagious longer than the seven days from when symptoms begin. The CDC recommends ending home isolation under the following conditions:
- At least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since the resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications; and
- Improvement of respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and,
- At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
For those waiting for their test results:
If you have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, stay home and away from others (Do not go to work/school, and avoid public places for 14 days). Check yourself for fever, cough, and shortness of breath for 14 days from the last day you had close contact with the person.
If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, self-isolate (stay home and away from others, including household members). You can stop self-isolating when: 1) It’s been at least 3 days with no fever without using fever-reducing medication 2) Your symptoms have improved, AND it has been at least 10 days since symptoms first appeared.
Stay Home After Travel – Especially after International Travel – Get Tested
It is recommend that you delay travel until you are fully vaccinated to reduce spreading COVID-19, particularly the variants. It is important if you aren’t fully vaccinated, that when you do travel:
- Stay home (self-quarantine) for 7 days after travel AND about 3-5 days after travel, get tested for COVID-19
- Even if you test negative, stay home for 7 days.
- If you don’t get tested, stay home for 10 days.
- Avoid being around people who are at risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.
